The year is 1896 in Venice, Italy; A man named Thomas is sent to Poveglia when he suddenly starts having symptoms related to the bubonic plague. There he encounters many horrors such as deadly doctors, snakes, rats, demons, and crazy asylum patients as he tries to keep himself alive. He forms close bonds with both the lead doctor, as well as the asylum administrator on the island, as he helps them try to solve a mysterious case of murdered doctors that have been suddenly happening on the island. Will Thomas escape the island of Poveglia? Or will he simply just become one of the thousands of souls that have lost their lives on the ash covered ground?
Filled with illustrations, this book also shows another story about the author's descent into a depressive madness caused by medications that are necessary for her health. As the book goes on, her mental state starts to heal, opening up to more humor and a clearer story.
